Transfer rates are quoted in bits per second while file sizes are in bytes, and that mismatch causes most of the confusion. Divide by 8 to move between them: a 100 Mbps line carries about 12.5 MB per second at best. Internet plans use decimal megabits, so 1 Mbps is exactly 1,000,000 bits per second.
