About Word Counter

A word counter tallies your text live as you type — words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and lines — plus estimated reading and speaking time. Paste or write and the counts update instantly. Everything runs in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.

Why two tools disagree about your word count

There is no single correct word count, because there is no single definition of a word. Most counters split on whitespace, so a hyphenated term like state-of-the-art counts as one word. Others split on hyphens too and call it four. An em dash with no spaces around it can fuse two words into one. Numbers, dates, and URLs are counted as single words by some tools and broken apart by others.

This is why a document can be 998 words in one program and 1,004 in another. If you are working to a hard limit set by someone else, the number that matters is the one produced by whatever they will check it with. Leave yourself a small margin rather than landing exactly on the limit.

Which count the limit actually means

Character limits are usually stricter than word limits, and they rarely mean what people assume. Meta descriptions are not really limited by characters at all — Google truncates on pixel width, around 920 pixels on desktop, which is roughly 155–160 characters of ordinary prose but far fewer if you use wide capitals. Title tags cut off around 580 pixels, about 60 characters.

Form fields and databases usually count characters including spaces. SMS is a special case: a message is 160 characters in the basic alphabet, but a single emoji or curly apostrophe switches the whole message to a 70-character-per-part encoding. That is why an apparently short message sometimes bills as two.

Reading and speaking time, and what they are worth

Reading time here assumes about 200 words per minute, which is a reasonable average for adults reading ordinary prose on screen. Real rates vary widely — 150 for dense technical material, over 300 for familiar light text — so treat the figure as a rough band, not a measurement.

Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute, which is close to a measured, presentational pace. Conversational speech runs faster, around 150. If you are timing a talk, read a page aloud at your real pace and compare it against the estimate before trusting it for a whole script — most people speak faster under pressure, not slower.

Practical targets

For anything you are writing to be read rather than to hit a quota, structure matters more than the total. Paragraphs of 40–80 words and sentences averaging 15–20 words stay comfortable on a phone screen. If your sentence count is low relative to your word count, your sentences are long and probably doing too much work each.

The paragraph and sentence counts are the most useful numbers here for that reason. A 1,200-word piece in nine paragraphs is a wall of text; the same 1,200 words in twenty is a page people finish.

Frequently asked questions

Does it count characters with and without spaces?
Both. It shows total characters and characters excluding spaces, which matters for limits like tweets, meta descriptions, and form fields.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute and speaking time about 130 words per minute, so both are quick estimates rather than exact figures.
Can it count sentences and paragraphs too?
Yes. Alongside words and characters it tracks sentences, paragraphs, and lines so you can see the full structure of your text at a glance.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens live in your browser and your text is never sent, stored, or uploaded to any server.
