Time tools are about attention more than measurement. A countdown with a definite end makes a task easier to start; a stopwatch settles how long something actually takes rather than how long it felt; a duration calculator answers the questions dates make surprisingly hard, like how many working days sit between two deadlines. The timers here keep accurate time from the clock rather than counting ticks, so switching tabs or minimising the window does not slow them down, and the alarm still sounds at zero.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A timer that counts its own ticks falls behind whenever the browser deprioritises a background tab, and the error accumulates quietly — you notice at the end, when the alarm is a minute late and whatever you were timing is overdone. Reading the real clock instead means the countdown is right whatever the tab was doing, which is the whole point of setting one and looking away.

Pick by the shape of the question. A fixed length you want to be told about is a timer; an open-ended stretch you want measured is a stopwatch; a fixed point in the future is a countdown to a date. If you are working in intervals, the timer plus the todo list is the pairing that does the most work — one holds the length, the other holds the reason.
